Christmas Boat Parade Sarasota 2024

If you’re planning to be in Sarasota for the holidays, then you absolutely have to make time for the 2024 Christmas Boat Parade. You may have seen parades before, but this one? It’s something truly special. It’s a tradition that’s been lighting up the bay since 1986.

The Essentials: Date, Time, and Location

Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 14, 2024, and clear your evening plans because the parade kicks off at 6:00 p.m. sharp. It’s going to run for about two hours, so you’ll have plenty of time to soak up the sights.

Admission is completely free. You can roll up with your folding chair, maybe a blanket, and just settle in for the show. However, if you want to make it extra special and snag a table at Marina Jack’s, you’re going to need to reserve ahead of time. Those tables fill up faster than you’d expect, and the seats there are prime.

What You’ll See

As soon as the parade kicks off, boats will start cruising from City Island, then glide under the Ringling Bridge, making their way down towards the southern end of Sarasota Bay.

In total, you’re looking at about 25 boats, each one more festively decorated than the last. Some are smaller, but you’ll also see some pretty impressive yachts, all sparkling with lights and Christmas decorations.

They’ll sail past some of Sarasota’s most iconic waterfront spots, and you’ll have about an hour to take it all in. Around 8:30 pm, the awards ceremony will take place at Marina Jack, where celebrity judges Lana Jackson and Lisa Baer will announce the best-decorated boats, with cash prizes on the line.

The Best Spots to Watch From

You can catch the parade from plenty of spots, but here’s a little tip—if you want to avoid the heaviest crowds, try watching from Centennial Park or even City Island itself.

Centennial Park tends to be roomier, with more parking options, and it’s still a fantastic vantage point. Plus, it’s close enough to the action but a little less congested than Bayfront. You’ll be glad you followed that advice when you’re easily finding a parking spot!

Also, it’s close to the iconic Van Wezel Auditorium, known by locals as the “purple cow,” so you’ll know exactly where you are.

How to Prepare for the Parade

Arrive early, at least an hour early if you want to snag a good spot. People tend to show up with lawn chairs and coolers like they’re getting ready for a mini tailgate. Some even bring snacks and drinks to keep the festive vibes going while they wait for the show to start.

And by the way, if you don’t bring chairs, you’ll wish you did, especially as the start time gets closer and the crowds begin to grow.

Also, if you want to really enjoy the parade, pack a picnic. Grab a cooler, throw in some sandwiches, drinks, maybe a thermos of hot chocolate (yes, even in Florida!), and find a nice spot to settle in by the bay. There’s something special about having a little picnic while you wait for the boats to light up the night.

This year, Suncoast Charities for Children is encouraging everyone to bring along an unwrapped toy or book as a donation. These gifts will be distributed to The Florida Center for Early Childhood, The Haven, and Children First.

So, not only will you be enjoying the holiday festivities, but you’ll also be helping to make a child’s Christmas brighter. It’s a beautiful way to give back, and it’s a big part of what makes this event feel so heartwarming and meaningful.
