In the Sarasota/Bradenton areas, holidays aren’t just celebrated individually or within the four walls of your home. Residents here know just how to have communal fun. They prefer to celebrate together and transform the holiday into an art form against palm trees and sandy shores.
If you’re seeking the cheer of the season wrapped up with coastal charm, Sarasota and Bradenton just might be the holiday spot you didn’t know you needed.
Here are some of the holiday events you just can’t afford to miss.
Lights in Bloom at Selby Gardens
If you’re looking to add a little magic to your holiday season, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ “Lights in Bloom” is one event you can’t afford to miss. The moment you step into Selby Gardens, you’re surrounded by what feels like a fairytale brought to life.
There are roughly two million lights in this setup; all of them illuminating every pathway and corner of the gardens. And it’s not just about the twinkle that makes it so exhilarating; it’s the way they use these lights to create an immersive experience.
You’ll find yourself walking through sensory light tunnels, which surround you with glowing patterns, colors, and designs that make you feel like you’re part of a magical world.
If you can, make sure you go for the early entry at 5:30 p.m. if you want to experience the lights before the crowd rolls in. It’s $40 for adults ($35 for members), and $20 for kids aged 5-17, while kids 4 and under get in free.
The general entry, which starts at 6:30 p.m., is slightly cheaper at $30 ($25 for members) and $15 for kids. If you’re visiting on December 17, they offer an all-inclusive ticket at $200 for adults and $50 for kids, which includes valet parking, a delicious buffet, and an open bar.
Tour of Lights on the Sarasota Trolley
This local favorite is an easy, fun way to see some of the best holiday light displays Sarasota has to offer without having to do any of the driving. Seriously, just sit back, relax, and let the festive vibes carry you away.
The tours start on December 2 and run nightly until December 30 (there will be no tours on the 24th-26th), with two departure times: 6:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., from the McDonald’s parking lot at Cattlemen & Bee Ridge.
Tickets are $20 per person, which is pretty great considering the route covers some of Sarasota’s most decked-out neighborhoods. And you can bring your own thermos with a little hot cider or cocoa to sip on during the ride (yes, even adults!).
Now, here’s a little pro tip: get there early to get your seat, because this is a super popular event and it’s very likely to fill up fast. And if you’ve got a bigger group, you can actually book a private trolley, making it the perfect way to have an exclusive holiday adventure with your favorite people.
Winter Wonderland on Old Main Street in Bradenton
For a true taste of community holiday spirit, head to Bradenton’s Winter Wonderland on Old Main Street. Scheduled for Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., this free event is a blast for families and anyone who loves the cozy vibe of a small-town holiday celebration.
While you’re strolling down Old Main Street with twinkling lights above you, there will be street performers bringing holiday cheer, and even a “snow” machine making it feel like a true winter wonderland right in sunny Florida.
They’ll have games like a snowball toss and “ice fishing” for the kiddos, as well as vendors selling everything from holiday crafts to tasty seasonal treats. And yes, Santa will be there, so bring the kids for a special photo-op.
