Located in Myakka City, Florida, Myakka Elephant Ranch is a non-profit organization founded by Lou Barreda in 2019, driven by his passion for elephant conservation.
After graduating with a marketing degree, Lou traveled to South Africa to attend a prestigious elephant conservation symposium. Inspired by the event and leading figures in the field, he decided to dedicate himself to elephant welfare.
The Myakka Elephant Ranch currently provides a sanctuary for three incredible elephants. Lou, a majestic 39-year-old African elephant, shares his home with Carol and Patty, both Asian elephants who are 38 years old.
Rescued from the entertainment industry, these gentle giants now roam freely on 30 acres of lush land with plenty of shade.
The Ranch is located 15 miles east of I-75 on CR 64 near Hunsaders Farm in Myakka City. It is open all year round but reservations have to be booked 3 to 4 months in advance.

The Myakka Elephant Ranch offers a unique Rise and Shine Caretaker Package, which is priced at $199 and limited to a small group each day. This exclusive experience allows you to become part of the elephants’ morning routine for a full hour.
You’ll get to help prepare their breakfast, ensuring they start their day with a delicious and nutritious meal. You can watch the elephants enjoy their favorites and learn about their dietary needs.
This intimate setting provides the perfect opportunity to ask the elephant caregivers any questions you have and capture unforgettable photos while you’re at it.
The grand finale of your experience is assisting with the bath of one of the Asian elephants, a crucial part of their daily routine. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes for this exciting, hands-on adventure.
2. Elephant Care Workshop
For $199, you could be among the 16 participants who get the weekly opportunity to go beyond observing and get hands-on experience assisting the caregivers.
You’ll probably get to help with tasks like recording weight measurements and keeping track of the elephants’ health.
The workshop also includes a fascinating segment on elephant trunks, where you’ll learn about their incredible dexterity and get to offer the elephants a treat while observing this firsthand.
And to commemorate your participation, you’ll even receive a special certificate upon completion of the workshop.
3. Elephant Spa Enrichment
This unique program allows you to participate in a daily elephant care routine alongside a group of up to 24 people. It’s a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the elephants’ well-being.
This experience also includes a 45-minute Educational Encounter where you’ll learn fascinating facts about elephants and even get a chance to touch them.
The program costs $79 for children between the ages of 5 and 8, and $130 for everyone 9 and above. While children under 4 can’t participate in the spa itself, they can still learn and touch the elephants during the educational portion with a paying adult.
