He and one of his sons were awarded 144 acres each as a homestead grant. The land was sold at $500 later on. Although sparsely inhabited during World War II, Longboat Key was a target range for Army Air Force planes.
Longboat Key as a town was incorporated on November 14, 1955. As development took over every acre of land then and now, only a few privately owned parcels can be seen as underdeveloped in some parts.
