Ca’D’Zan mansion and the Ringling Museum of art are by far two of Sarasota’s premier attractions. The Ca’D’Zan is a Venetian-style mansion sitting on 20 acres of Sarasota Bay waterfront. This beauty has been around for decades; at some point, it lost its glory, but now it’s back to attracting public attention like never before.
The Ringling Museum of art is also connected to the Ca’D’Zan mansion. They were created by John Ringling of Ringling Circus fame in the 1920s. This place sits adjacent to the mansion and is indeed state-of-the-art. It has a unique and interesting collection of artworks in its gallery.
There is a lot more to enjoy when you tour these two famous buildings. Before diving into what you find here, it would be better to give you a little on their background.
History of the Ca’D’Zan Mansion and Ringling Museum of Art
The original owners of this beautiful mansion were John and Mabel Ringling. The name Ca’D’Zan means “House of John.”
The reason why this mansion was built is to create a detailed private home in the country. The inspiration to build this mansion was from the Doge’s Palace and Stanford White, now the demolished Madison Square Garden, when they were on a trip in Italy.
After this trip, Mable came bearing a briefcase containing photos, inspirational sketches, and notes that would be used in building the mansion. Later, the building began and was completed in 1926 with a total cost of $1.65 million.
This house was beautiful, but John and his family would not stay there for long. He willed the property and most of his art to Florida’s government due to debt! The house was in a bad state until 2002, when the renovation began.
For the museum, John Ringling built it to accommodate his many artworks. It was also later renovated and is now a top attraction to locals and tourists visiting the Sarasota/Manatee area.

The Connection between John Ringling and the Circus
John Ringling was a circus king. His flamboyance, salesmanship, and more top characters would compete with the acts that the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey combined shows. He ran the family circus for 30 years, after which he sold it. This was after defeating his contentious relatives.
The Ca’D’Zan Mansion and the Ringling Museum of Art have an exciting history. People travel worldwide to Sarasota to experience the beauty of these two foundations.
