North Port

North Port is a city in southern Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 57,357 at the 2010 census. It is part of the North Port–Bradenton–Sarasota Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was originally developed by General Development Corporation as the northern or Sarasota County part of its Port Charlotte development. GDC dubbed it North Port Charlotte, and it was incorporated under that name through a special act of the Florida Legislature in 1959. By referendum in 1974 the city’s residents approved a change to simply North Port to proclaim its separate identity.

Warm Minerals Springs and Park is enjoyed by thousands of visitors on a yearly basis. The city features a large state forest inside the city limits which is enjoyed for recreational activities. North Port provides direct access to the scenic Myakka River which features a variety of wildlife and can be explored with guided tours. Scenic cruises are available on the Intercoastal Waterway. Don Pedro Island State Park is a popular destination. Babcock Wildlife Management area is an excellent location for hiking and bicycle riding and offers guided swamp buggy tours.

The near-by Gulf of Mexico is known for beautiful beaches and deep-sea fishing. The region is home to Port Charlotte Beach State Park and Stump Pass Beach State Park. It’s a short drive to the popular Everglades National Park. The area offers a large number of quality golf courses. Manatee State Park is about 30 miles away.
